Markdown notes, designed for macOS
Free, with no account. Your notes stay plain .md files in a folder you choose, and work offline.
What Inkwell does
Live Markdown, Beautifully Rendered
Inkwell renders Markdown formatting as you type — headings, lists, blockquotes, and code blocks with syntax highlighting. Smart typography converts quotes and dashes automatically. The status bar shows word count, reading time, and cursor position.
Your Data, Your Rules
Notes are plain .md files stored in a folder you choose. Point a vault at iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or any cloud folder — Inkwell detects changes synced from other devices and reloads automatically. No account, no server, no lock-in. Works fully offline.
Organized, Your Way
Separate vaults for different projects, nested folders, and multiple tabs with saved scroll positions. Drag and drop files and folders to reorder, sort by name, date, or manual position.
What Changed, and When
Every vault keeps a record of how its notes change, written automatically as you work. See what a version changed, side by side with the one before it, then restore that version. Those versions live in Inkwell's own storage, not in your notes folder.
Find Anything, Instantly
Fuzzy search across filenames with typo tolerance. Full-text content search across the entire vault with match highlighting. In-editor find and replace with case sensitivity toggle.
From the Terminal, Too
Create notes, organize vaults, search content, and export files without leaving the terminal. The native inkwell command fits naturally into scripts and routines, so repetitive tasks can run on their own. Every change appears in the desktop app instantly, with tab-completion and built-in help for every command.
Make It Yours
Choose a light or dark theme, pick from ten accent colors, and set custom fonts for UI, editor, and code blocks. Fine-tune code block behavior with line numbers, line wrapping, bracket matching, and auto-closing brackets. Sort files alphabetically, manually, or by date, and control PDF export theme and page numbering.
